Introduction to A2

My name is Justin Balagot and for my media A2 task, I have chosen to create a film trailer for the genre of my choice, along with creating a poster and a magazine cover to promote the film further. During this task I will be working in a group with Ellis Barnard to help create the film trailer. Our aim for this task is to produce a high quality film trailer which is realistic and similar to other real trailers for real films.

The genres we have decided to focus are both horror and action genre. The unique aspect of our film which separates it from other horror film is that it is a combination of both horror and action. I believe that this combination will be successful because the horror aspects of our film links in well with the action genre, as there are plenty of ‘fighting’ or ‘action’ scenes. Another way this film is different to other horror films is that on the plot of the film, there will be no survivor in the end.

The main plot of our film is that there are a group of four friends who are curious about a ‘secret’ unreleased game. As they all get a copy, they begin to get addicted to it. The games challenge is to stay alive, in the ‘riot city’. However, they soon realise that whatever happens in the ‘game’, begins to happen in reality too. As each one begins to die, death soon followed in real life.

Todorov proposed a basic structure for all narratives. He stated that films and programmes begin with equilibrium, a calm period. Then agents of disruption cause disequilibrium, a period of unsettlement and disquiet. This is then followed by a renewed state of peace and harmony for the protagonists and a new equilibrium brings the chaos to an end. This is relevant to our film as the calm period is attained at the beginning of our film to which the group of boys are still waiting to obtain the ‘game’. This sense of calmness is then disrupted as each of the characters begin to experience some distress and are then killed one by one. As the last two boys are left, we find that this was all because of one of the boys who was trying to play a ‘joke’ on his friends but turns out that they all die. This leads to all of his friends dying and the boy finally dying himself at the end. This brings a sense of calmness at the end of the film as the ‘cursed’ game is now over.
